What is involved in the lift truck training course?
In the training course, candidates will learn hazard awareness techniques to minimise risks to both the operator and those in the surrounding area. They will be introduced to the specific type of forklift truck to be used, along with a breakdown of the daily pre-use inspection and maintenance principles to be followed before operating the truck. The course will cover vehicle-specific fueling requirements for battery-powered, LPG, and diesel trucks.
Candidates will be trained on starting, moving, and stopping the truck, as well as how to manoeuvre in open and confined areas. They will also learn about the operation of hydraulic controls and how to assess weight and stability factors. The course will provide information on handling unladen and laden pallets, with a focus on correct loading and unloading procedures at various heights, including stacking and de-stacking.
As part of the training, candidates will watch a safety video showcasing best practices and they will take a theory test focusing on lift truck knowledge. Additionally, a practical test of basic operating skills will be conducted to assess operator competency.
How often should forklift training be refreshed?
Forklift operator training should be undertaken at least once every 3-5 years. This will be sooner if an accident has occurred, or if the candidate has a long period of non-use. A novice is a person who does not drive and has never had any operational contact with a forklift truck or similar rear steer lifting machine.
