Banksman Training

A Banksman, also known as a Banksperson, is a highly skilled and qualified individual who is responsible for directing the movements of large vehicles on-site. They use a system of hand signals or radio links to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of workers.

The Banksman must possess excellent communication skills and ensure that all other workers are aware of their location and activities. Additionally, they play a key role in maintaining the safety and smooth movement of people and equipment through work zones.

The Banksman also ensures that loading and unloading manoeuvres do not endanger the driver or others. They are responsible for overseeing lifting operations to ensure there are no obstructions and monitoring the driver’s safety.

Why take a Banksman course?

Reversing manoeuvres can be risky, especially in tight spaces. Vehicle Banksman training helps organizations meet legal requirements, reduce the risk of expensive accidents, and ensure the safety of all employees who drive large vehicles.

Banksman training ensures that organizations meet their legal requirements and reduce the risk of costly accidents when performing large vehicle reversing manoevres. It also promotes safe working practices, reduces the risk of injury or damage to expensive equipment, and creates safer workplace environments for everyone involved.

The role of a banksman is often confused with that of a Traffic Marshal. A banksman is responsible for directing site traffic and larger vehicles in and out of tight spaces, often on construction sites or in industrial warehouses. On the other hand, a traffic marshal banksman is responsible for general traffic direction, helping to keep people safe when there is a high volume of cars, trucks, and buses on the road. Accidents can occur when vehicles get too close to one another.

Who should take the Banksman course?

Our Banksman course is intended for anyone involved in the safe manoeuvring of large goods vehicles, including rigid and articulated ones. At ULTS, we instruct participants in the HSE-approved code of signals, ensuring that all movements are conducted safely, with emergency procedures in place in case of any mishaps on-site. The course is designed for all individuals involved in manoeuvring, loading, and unloading vehicles. It covers the responsibilities of a banksman and provides practical experience to ensure that all manoeuvres during loading and unloading are conducted without risking the safety of anyone involved.
If you are looking for a job in the industry and want to take on a substantial responsibility with limited supervision and high levels of autonomy, then completing Banksman training could see you rewarded with a highly desirable position within an organisation.
